The Portuguese Government increased the public guarantee for the granting of housing credit aimed at young people by an additional 100 million euros. This decision comes in response to requests submitted by Novo Banco and Caixa Económica Montepio Geral, which requested an increase in the available financial envelope for these credit operations.
The measure was formalized through Order no. 10855/2026, published in the Official Gazette. According to the decree, the increase in the guarantee aims to meet the credit operation forecasts presented by the two banking institutions, which indicated the need for greater allocation of resources to meet the housing demand from young people.
This increase comes in the context of public policies supporting access to housing for the young population, a sector that has faced significant difficulties in the Portuguese real estate market. The public guarantee functions as protection for financial institutions, encouraging them to grant credit on more favorable terms for young buyers.
The order thus represents a continuation of government efforts to boost the housing market and facilitate property ownership for young people, through the public guarantee mechanism that reduces the risk associated with granting credit in this segment.
