"Adventure at the Blue Center" raised awareness among young people to protect the oceans

Diário de Coimbra2 September 2026 at 11:02

The "Adventure at the Blue Center" initiative aimed to raise awareness among young people about ocean protection. The action took place within the framework of an environmental awareness campaign aimed at children and young people.

The main activity was a beach cleanup action, where participants were able to directly contribute to the removal of waste from the coastal area. This practical experience allowed young people to concretely understand the impacts of pollution on marine ecosystems.

The participating children and young people belonged to the ATL (Leisure Time Activities) of the Parish Unit for Social Support of Praia de Mira. This social institution is responsible for the follow-up and leisure activities of children and adolescents in the region.

Praia de Mira was the chosen location for this awareness-raising effort, being a coastal area in the district of Coimbra where this type of cleanup action has particular relevance for the preservation of the local environment.

Recreational bivalve fishing banned in the international stretch of the Minho river from November

Recreational bivalve fishing will be prohibited in the international stretch of the Minho river from 1 November 2026, for public health reasons, until a management plan is approved. The notice, published in the Official Gazette for the 2026/2027 season, establishes that all harvesting of clams and any other bivalves is prohibited, as the ITM (International Stretch of the Minho River) is not a production area monitored by IPMA. Although commercial harvesting had never been permitted, recreational harvesting was previously allowed. The permanent management committee of the ITM is making efforts to create a monitoring and verification plan for the condition of bivalves.

Pias creates "Lavadeira", a project that recovers the memory of the past to serve the present

The Junta de Freguesia of Pias inaugurated LAVADEIRA, a community self-service laundromat with an investment of around 50 thousand euros. The facility, which operates every day from 08:00 to 20:00, arose from identifying a need of the local population, particularly for washing and drying larger items. The name evokes the tradition of the washerwomen who washed clothes in the streams, and a mural by artist Cláudio Preguiça, called "The Washerwomen", transforms the space into a tribute to the women who performed this task, linking past and present.
