The National Education Council (CNE) approved yesterday Brazil's first regulation for the use of artificial intelligence in education. Experts praised the rules, classifying them as "prudent" and "forward-looking."
The norm prohibits teachers from elementary school through university, in both public and private networks, from using AI to grade students' essays or written assignments. The measure seeks to preserve the pedagogical role of the teacher in evaluating students' written work.
Students up to the 5th grade will also face restrictions: they will not be able to use AI tools without teacher guidance. The intention is to ensure that technology is used in a supervised manner appropriate to the age group.
Academic researchers, on the other hand, will be required to explicitly disclose the use of AI tools in their work. The regulation establishes guidelines aimed at promoting responsible use of technology in the Brazilian educational environment.
