The National Education Council (CNE) approved this Tuesday the first regulation in Brazil for the use of artificial intelligence in education. The approval was the last stage of the regulation process within the council, but the norms only take effect after approval by the Ministry of Education (MEC). After publication in the Official Gazette, educational institutions, both public and private, will have 12 months to comply with the new rules.
Among the main changes are the prohibition of students up to 5th grade using generative AI tools alone. In addition, teachers from elementary to higher education are prohibited from using the technology to correct essay exams or student writing assignments.
The regulation also addresses the issue of data protection. When students use AI tools at school or university, this data cannot be sold or shared inappropriately, ensuring greater security for student information.
