The image of a cat drinking milk from a saucer is part of popular culture, but this practice has no veterinary support. Veterinarian Javier Guaita explained in a video posted on TikTok by the Guaita Veterinaris account that cow's milk is not an appropriate food for felines, regardless of the stage of life.
In adult cats, the main problem is related to difficulty digesting lactose, the sugar present in milk. As cats age, the production of lactase, the enzyme responsible for processing lactose, decreases. In adulthood, this enzyme can be reduced to minimal levels.
As a result, the feline's body may have difficulty processing the drink, and digestive problems, including diarrhea and vomiting, can occur.
