Chinese media outlets accused Real Madrid of "feeding separatist discourses" after the Spanish club published a statement about the floods in Tibet and Nepal. The club's publication compared the flood situation in Tibet with that of Nepal, treating the two regions as if they were independent countries.
China's state media considered that the wording used by Real Madrid equated Tibet to a sovereign country, which goes against China's official position that Tibet is an autonomous region of China. The Chinese government requires that regions such as Tibet always be referred to as part of Chinese territory.
This is not the first time that companies or international organizations have faced criticism from China over matters related to the naming or treatment of Tibet. The country has a strict policy regarding how foreign organizations must refer to its autonomous regions.
Real Madrid has not yet officially commented on the criticism from Chinese media regarding this publication about the floods that affected the two regions.
