Russian President Vladimir Putin told Armenia that the country must choose between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, considering the two options incompatible. The statement came during a tense meeting between Putin and the Armenian prime minister.
Moscow considers that Yerevan's willingness to apply to the European Union is not compatible with membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, an economic bloc led by Russia of which Armenia is a member.
The Armenian prime minister was present at the meeting during which this tense exchange of words occurred between the two leaders, evidencing the diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
