Russian President Vladimir Putin told Armenia that the country must choose between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, considering Yerevan's candidacy to the EU incompatible while being a member of the Moscow-led organization. The Eurasian Economic Union is formed by countries of the former Soviet Union.
The Armenian prime minister and Putin had a tense exchange of words on this issue. The meeting took place at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, in Kyrgyzstan, in Central Asia.
This was the first meeting between the two political leaders since the elections in Armenia, whose text appears cut off, making it impossible to fully identify the additional context of those elections.
