A rebellion was recorded on Tuesday afternoon at the new Amazonas Military Police Prison Unit (UPPM/AM), in Manaus. Three military police officers — a major, a cadet, and a soldier — are being held as hostages by the inmates, according to preliminary information. The identities of the hostages have not yet been disclosed, and the prisoners are said to have made demands for privileges.
The prison unit is located at km 8 of the BR-174 highway, in the rural area of Manaus, next to the Anísio Jobim Prison Complex (Compaj). The military prison was installed in May this year in the former building of the Female Penitentiary of Manaus.
The facility has more than 70 imprisoned military police officers and holds 80 inmates, who remain under the custody of military police officers. Security forces teams were mobilized to respond to the incident, with off-duty police officers being called in.
So far, there is no official confirmation on the number of people involved, any injuries, or the circumstances that may have caused the riot at the prison unit.
