Berlin blames Moscow for drone incident in Leipzig and closes Russian consulate in Bonn

SAPO Notícias1 September 2026 at 19:57

The German government announced it will close the Russian consulate in Bonn in response to the drone incident recorded in early August at Leipzig-Halle airport. A drone loaded with explosives was discovered in the security zone of the airport's cargo operations, near several Ukrainian cargo planes.

A second device allegedly collided with a DHL cargo plane, increasing suspicions that the attacks targeted logistics operations linked to Ukraine. German authorities concluded that Moscow is responsible for these incidents.

The German Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to formally communicate the decision. The closure of the consulate in Bonn represents a significant escalation in bilateral relations between the two countries.

Berlin also stated that it will take additional measures against Russia, without specifying which, as part of the response to this threat to German national security.
