Donald Trump's administration cut the SERVIR-Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) program, which monitored glacier collapse in Nepal. The program was developed jointly by NASA, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).
One year after the program was cut, Nepal is now facing a catastrophe related to glacier collapse. The SERVIR-HKH program was responsible for continuous monitoring of glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, enabling early warnings and preparation for catastrophic events.
The decision to eliminate this monitoring program left Nepal without crucial data on glacier evolution, compromising the country's ability to anticipate and respond to natural disasters related to glacial melting.
