Storms that hit the South region of Brazil over the past week caused hail rain occurrences in at least 173 municipalities, according to data from state Civil Defense agencies. The records across the three Southern states also include damage from heavy rain, strong winds, flooding and landslides. Additionally, seven other municipalities in São Paulo recorded hail occurrences in the past seven days.
In Rio Grande do Sul, 98 municipalities recorded occurrences during the validity of Hydrometeorological Warning No. 15, which began on August 27. A total of 86 hail records were counted, in addition to 16 heavy rain events, seven windstorm events, two mass movement events and two flooding events.
In total, 33,857 people were affected by the storms in Rio Grande do Sul. The balance indicates that two people died, seven were injured, 24 were left homeless and 51 were displaced due to the effects of the storms.
