European Union: Von der Leyen promises response to Russian hybrid attacks before meeting with Rutte

Euronews Portugal1 September 2026 at 18:17

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised a coordinated response to Russian hybrid attacks during a meeting with the NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte. The main objective of the meeting was to align positions between the EU and NATO regarding the growing hybrid threats coming from Russia.

Germany officially announced that it attributes to Russia the responsibility for a hybrid attack involving an explosive-armed drone targeting an airport. This incident represents an escalation in hostile activities attributed to the Russian government on European territory.

The meeting between Von der Leyen and Rutte comes in a context of growing concern about Russia's destabilization attempts, which have included cyber attacks, disinformation, and drone operations targeting critical European infrastructure.

Both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and NATO to address these threats, promising joint measures to protect infrastructure and European interests against hybrid operations.
