The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is about to finalize an agreement with a fertilization clinic to offer women's national team players the option to freeze their eggs. The measure aims to allow athletes to preserve their fertility and the possibility of becoming mothers in the future without having to interrupt their careers. The program is expected to begin this September.
The issue was raised by the Spanish players themselves with the federation, which responded to the demand with this initiative. Egg freezing is a medical procedure that removes and stores female gametes at ultra-low temperatures for later use in a future pregnancy.
The measure represents another advancement in Spanish women's football, which in recent years has won important rights, such as professionalization and paid maternity leave. The Spanish national team is the current champion of the Women's World Cup, and the clubs also have great strength in the sport, especially Barcelona, which won the Champions League last season.
