Air travel between Madeira and mainland Portugal is reaching prices close to 500 euros in the first period of the academic year. The situation particularly affects Madeiran students in higher education who need to travel to universities on the mainland.
Reader Jorge Freitas contacted the newspaper DIÁRIO to report that there are no air tickets between Madeira and the mainland for less than 400 euros. His son will be studying this year at the University of Lisbon for the first time.
DIÁRIO decided to check the prices charged by the three airline companies that provide direct connections between Funchal and the mainland. Many Madeiran students are currently preparing for their move at the start of the new academic year, facing these high transportation costs.
