Solar production breaks record in August

Eco1 September 2026 at 17:06

Portugal registered a 3.1% increase in electricity consumption between January and August, according to REN data. In August, solar production reached a new power peak, with about 3,850 MW, driven by growth in installed capacity, despite less favorable weather conditions for wind and photovoltaic production. During that month, renewable energies supplied 52% of national electricity consumption, non-renewable production represented 12%, and the remaining 36% came from imports, which reached a new maximum above 5,200 MW after the reinforcement of the interconnection with Spain. In the first eight months of the year, renewable production accounted for 66% of consumption, divided among hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaic, and biomass, while natural gas represented 14% and the import balance the remaining 20%. Natural gas consumption grew 2.2% in the period, with Nigeria and the United States as main sources of supply.

Howden Re, the reinsurance arm of broker group Howden, opened an office in Lisbon in August, reporting to the Iberian structure in Madrid. Filipe Duarte, who spent 12 years at AON and previously at WTW, leads the Portuguese operation. Howden Re, headquartered in London, has become one of the group's main growth areas following the acquisition of TigerRisk in 2023, having doubled in size and approaching 700 million euros in revenues in 2025. In Portugal, the company intends to build a local team close to the market, work with insurers, MGAs and other operators, and offer access to the main global reinsurance markets. Duarte acknowledges that recent storms in Portugal have highlighted the country's catastrophic exposure beyond seismic risk, and believes that the eventual creation of a catastrophe fund will bring challenges and opportunities for the sector.
