A study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin in August revealed what scientists called the "self-expansion potential of singlehood." The study examined the popular belief that being single offers opportunities to "expand" consciousness and self-knowledge in a way that was previously associated exclusively with being in a relationship.
Researchers analyzed how the single status can provide advantages related to personal growth. According to the self-expansion theory, a central principle of this study, people tend to expand through intimate relationships, but scientists investigated whether the same potential can be achieved through single life.
The research offers a new perspective on singlehood, showing that there is a "bright side" to being without a partner. For some people, staying single represents a dream, while for others it is a nightmare, but now there is scientific backing for those who choose this lifestyle.
The study suggests that science validates the choice of those who prefer the solitary life, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve personal development and expand consciousness outside of a relationship.
