Quercus denounced the felling of 1,400 cork oaks for the expansion of an industrial park in Covilhã. The environmental organization alerted to this situation, which it considers serious, pointing to the massive destruction of trees in this area.
The organization recalled that the cork oak is a protected species, which makes this felling even more problematic from an environmental point of view. Furthermore, Quercus highlighted that dozens of the 1,400 cork oaks to be felled are centuries-old, representing a significant ecological and historical value that is lost with this intervention.
The felling is associated with the expansion project of the industrial park in Covilhã, which involves the removal of a large amount of vegetation to make way for the industrial development of the region.
