It now falls to the European Commission to evaluate whether the extension of the controls complies with European rules on free movement and with the regulation on temporary controls at internal borders.
The EU executive announced today that it is analysing this Italian decision, at a time when migratory management in Europe continues to raise questions about the balance between security and freedom of movement in the Schengen area.
