The Portuguese Navy saved more than 300 lives in the first eight months of the year, according to operational data recorded so far. This number represents a significant increase in maritime rescue activity carried out by the institution.
Most rescue incidents were recorded in the Lisbon area, which concentrated the largest volume of emergency operations. This coastal region, with intense port traffic and nautical activity, has been the scene of frequent situations requiring intervention from naval authorities.
The Navy delegations in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, and in Funchal, in Madeira, recorded 14 rescue operations during this period. These two locations, although further from the mainland, maintain an important naval presence for maritime safety in the island regions.
The data reveal the fundamental role of the Portuguese Navy in the surveillance and protection of national territorial waters, ensuring a rapid response to emergencies that occur along the entire coast and in the autonomous regions.
