The Formula 1 that never raced will finally accelerate at Estoril 45 years later

SAPO Notícias1 September 2026 at 13:59

There are motorsport stories that seem to have been frozen in time. Such is the case of the Riviera F.1 170, an Italian single-seater designed to compete in the 1980 Formula 1 World Championship, but which never lined up for a Grand Prix. Forty-five years after it was designed, the car will be seen on track.

The car was developed by the Italian brand Riviera, but never managed to participate in an official race of the championship. Although it was built to compete in the 1980 season, various circumstances prevented the single-seater from making its debut.

After decades of waiting, the Riviera F.1 170 will finally accelerate at the Estoril racetrack in Portugal. This event represents a unique opportunity for motorsport enthusiasts to see in action a car that has gone down in history as one of the projects that never officially competed.
