A chronicle about nothing

In 1996, Brazilian poet Manoel de Barros (1916-2014) wrote "Livro sobre Nada" (Book about Nothing), inspired by Gustave Flaubert's phrase about the desire to write a book sustained only by style. Barros created a hymn to the absurd, to childhood and to creative freedom, transforming insignificance and silence into pure poetry. He wrote four sets of short poems in which he deconstructs language to reorganize a singular world, expressing his adherence to everything that is empty, solitary or unimportant.

From a philosophical point of view, nothing can be the absence or the origin of all things. A blank page can create both dread and fascination. Nihilism, existentialism, Buddhist emptiness, quantum vacuum, outer space or the concept of zero in mathematics are possible approaches to make sense of what appears to have no meaning. The valorization of leisure and the art of doing nothing reveal infinite beauty and an immense space for fulfillment in small or unimportant things.

Writing about nothing is, paradoxically, giving form and meaning to emptiness through words and exercising a creative freedom that allows the fluidity of the mind without the shackles of logical structures. Julia Cameron suggests "the artist's way," a program focused on self-knowledge, creative unblocking and the recovery of artistic self-confidence, based on the premise that creativity is a natural spiritual force.

The article suggests that the dread of the blank page can be transformed into fascination by focusing on the silence of the room, the texture of the table or the reflection of light on a bare wall. Emptiness is presented as an illusion, for what we designate as nothing is full of connections, energy and potential, seething with energy fields and virtual particles that emerge and disappear at every instant.
