Iran has sentenced two women to the death penalty for alleged participation in the January anti-government protests. Taraneh Rahimi, aged 20, and Leila Abolhasani, aged 43, were sentenced in separate trials, both related to the contestation against the government.
The convictions were pronounced by Iranian courts in the context of the protests that erupted in the country. Human rights organizations have been denouncing irregularities in the trials, questioning the transparency and fairness of the legal procedures adopted.
One of the sentences, specifically that of one of the women, will be reviewed on appeal, which could lead to a revision of the capital punishment applied.
