Italy is considering a new law that will fine pedestrians who cross the public road while holding a mobile phone. The proposal provides for a fine of 75 euros for anyone using the device while crossing the street.
The use of mobile phones while driving is already a known and punished infraction in that country. However, this new legislation aims to also cover pedestrians, creating a new category of infraction for those who do not pay attention to the road while crossing.
The measure comes in the context of a broader effort to reduce road accidents. The Italian authorities thus intend to also hold pedestrians accountable for their behavior at pedestrian crossings.
