The breweries of Guarapuava, in the central region of Paraná, received the first Geographical Indication (IG) in Brazil for craft beer. The registration, in the Indication of Source (IP) modality, was granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and announced in early August. The achievement is due to the strong historical connection of the region with barley and malt culture, with the production process happening from field to glass.
The municipality has nine breweries that, together, produce 100 thousand liters monthly of the drink. The sector generates approximately 150 direct jobs and moves more than R$ 2.5 million per month in the local economy.
The president of the Association of Breweries of Guarapuava (Guaracerva), Larissa Vier, highlighted that tradition and historical reputation were decisive for obtaining the registration. The Geographical Indication recognizes the origin and unique characteristics of products associated with a given region.
