The British government decided to sell the mansion that housed the British Council in Lisbon, thus ending a presence of 84 years in the Portuguese capital. The building was sold for 15 million euros.
According to the director of the British Council in Lisbon, the loss of residents in the area where the mansion was located led to a "sharp decline in the number of students". This decrease in attendance contributed to the decision to sell the property.
The mansion "no longer offered good value for money for the British taxpayer", according to the assessment that led to the sale. The building will thus cease to serve as the headquarters of the British Council in Lisbon after more than eight decades.
