EU grapples with migration issue again after Ceuta crisis

Euronews Portugal1 September 2026 at 06:59

After a summer marked by the Ceuta crisis, European Union countries are grappling again with the migration issue, seeking new solutions to manage migratory flows. The Ceuta crisis, which occurred during the summer period, exposed the existing weaknesses in the EU's migration control mechanisms.

In this context, member states are exploring various alternatives to address the challenge. Among the measures under discussion are the reinforcement of controls at the external borders of the Union, the creation of deportation centers outside European territory, and the implementation of mechanisms for redistributing migrants among member countries.

The debate on these issues has been particularly intense throughout this autumn, with countries seeking to reach a consensus on the best approach to follow. Divergences between member states continue to be significant, reflecting the different political positions and reception capacities of each country.
