Portugal in top 10 countries with most wind energy

Jornal Económico1 September 2026 at 07:00

Portugal is the seventh country that inaugurates the most wind energy in the European Union, having launched 200 megawatts of new capacity in the first half of this year, raising the total installed to more than six gigawatts. By the end of the year, another 50 megawatts will be installed. This new capacity corresponds to a single project: the Tâmega wind farm, by Spanish company Iberdrola, with a total of 274 megawatts and an investment of 350 million euros.

The data was released by the European wind industry association Wind Europe. In the EU, 16 countries inaugurated new capacity, totaling 5.3 gigas of onshore wind and 1.7 gigas of offshore wind, representing nine billion euros of new investment. Germany leads the ranking with more than 2.3 gigas installed, followed by Spain with 600 megawatts and Poland with 456 megawatts.

Europe is on track for a new record in wind energy, with 8.8 gigas installed in the first half of the year, up 30 percent compared to the same period last year. Wind Europe forecasts a total of 24 gigas of new capacity by the end of the year and expects that by 2030, 20 new gigas will be installed each year. The association warned that despite the good moment, structural problems persist and that political choices in licensing, grids and electrification will determine whether the growth trend continues.
