Trump asks Apple to change name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on its maps

RTP Notícias1 September 2026 at 06:40

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, asked Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on its maps application, according to the US Secretary of the Interior. The request came just days after Trump officially announced the name change of the lake.

The name change was effected by the United States government, which proceeded with the renaming process of the lake, one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Trump's decision to rename the lake was part of a broader set of measures he took related to the northern border and the neighboring country.

The request to Apple was publicly conveyed by the Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, who communicated the Trump administration's intention to see the change reflected on the digital platforms of the technology giant. Apple is one of the technology companies with the greatest influence on how users view maps and geographic data on their devices.

This is not the first time Trump has tried to rename Lake Ontario, having already made a similar request during his first term. The name change has generated debate, as Lake Ontario is an international geographic reference with centuries of history and recognition on both sides of the border between the US and Canada.
