The Italian UniCredit bank is confident that the European Commission will authorize the purchase of German Commerzbank from October onwards. The operation represents a decisive offensive by UniCredit to expand in Germany.
According to the 240-page public takeover bid prospectus, UniCredit plans to present the operation's notification to the European Commission this month of September, thus beginning the regulatory process.
The operation involves a significant value and marks an ambitious attempt at consolidation in the European banking sector, with UniCredit seeking to strengthen its position in the German market through the acquisition of its rival Commerzbank.
