The Economist compares Renan Santos to Milei and highlights 'obsession with the free market', but criticizes 'boasting'

oglobo1 September 2026 at 02:59

The Economist magazine published an article comparing presidential candidate Renan Santos, from the Missão party, to Argentine President Javier Milei, highlighting what it called the candidate's "obsession with free markets" present in his platform. The text acknowledges that he has a technical and detailed platform that outlines a bold vision for Brazil.

However, the article criticizes Renan's "bragging," mentioning statements such as having learned Swedish to flirt and insults directed at rivals, which it called childish, pathetic, and mediocre. The publication recognizes the candidate's inflammatory rhetoric as part of his political strategy.

After the initial publication, the magazine added a note clarifying that Supreme Court (STF) and Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Justice Dias Toffoli had suspended Renan's candidacy. In fact, Toffoli's decision only suspends digital propaganda on profiles registered with the TSE after the candidacy filing and prevents the candidate from participating in debates, without mentioning a definitive suspension of the candidacy.
