The change of the traditional name, which is shared with Canada, represents one of the attempts by the US government to replace place names that reference foreign countries or peoples.
Apple, the company responsible for the widely used map system on millions of devices, was thus called upon to implement the change in its digital services. The company has not publicly commented on the President's request.
