Édouard Balladur dies, former French prime minister and Chirac's rival

Conservative Édouard Balladur died this Monday in Paris, at the age of 97. Balladur was prime minister of France between 1993 and 1995, during the final phase of the presidency of socialist François Mitterrand. He was a member of the Republican party and was known as a moderate right-wing politician. Balladur was also a rival of Jacques Chirac, with whom he ran for the Presidency of the Republic in 1995, having lost that election. His death marks the end of a multi-decade political career in French politics.
