Portugal surpassed today the number of medals achieved in its two previous participations in the Mediterranean Games, reaching 26 medals in total. This historic milestone was achieved after the victories of Auriol Dongmo in the shot put event in athletics, the athletics team in the 4×100 meters relay, and the women's football team.
The conquests happened in a period of only two hours, described as "mind-blowing" by the Portuguese Mission present in Taranto2026, the host city of the Mediterranean Games. During this short span of time, Portugal saw its athletes win multiple gold medals simultaneously.
Among the protagonists of these conquests is Auriol Dongmo, Portuguese athlete who defeated a compatriot in the shot put competition, thus securing one of the most significant gold medals for the Portuguese delegation.
This result represents a historic milestone for Portuguese sport at the Mediterranean Games, demonstrating a significant evolution compared to previous editions of the competition, in which Portugal had not managed to achieve such a high number of medals.
