Trump puts withdrawing support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands on the table

Expresso31 August 2026 at 22:35

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, put on the table the possibility of withdrawing American support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, also known as Falklands. The statement comes at a time of diplomatic tensions between the two historical allies.

Trump's statements were made after reports that the American administration considers using the Falkland Islands issue as a pressure instrument on the United Kingdom. The objective would be to pressure London to increase its military spending, fulfilling commitments made with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, but Argentina also claims their sovereignty, calling them Malvinas. The issue is a sensitive point in relations between the United Kingdom and Argentina since the armed conflict of 1982, when the British recovered the islands after a brief war.

The possible change in the American position represents a significant alteration in US foreign policy regarding the South Atlantic, a region of strategic importance due to its maritime routes and natural resources. Analysts point out that Trump's posture may be related to a broader strategy of negotiating with European allies over the sharing of defense costs.
