United States sues Amazon for applying hidden costs to its advertisers

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General31 August 2026 at 21:23

More than 20 states in the United States joined the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to file a lawsuit against Amazon for alleged irregularities in its advertising pricing practices. The complaint was filed jointly by these government entities against the e-commerce company.

According to a report by the newspaper The Wall Street Journal, the complainants allege that Amazon manipulated for seven years the prices that companies paid to advertise on its retail commerce platform. This practice allegedly affected numerous companies that used the platform to promote their products.

The FTC, which is the federal agency responsible for consumer protection and competition regulation in the United States, is leading this lawsuit together with the participating states. The complaint focuses specifically on the pricing practices that Amazon allegedly implemented in its advertising service.

This process represents one of the largest regulatory actions against Amazon in recent years, with multiple jurisdictions joining together to demand transparency and fairness in the costs charged to advertisers using the company's e-commerce platform.
