ABL Cycle Rescues Letters from Great Authors, from Machado de Assis to Clarice Lispector

The September Conference Cycle of the Brazilian Academy of Letters is dedicated to the epistolary activity of great Brazilian authors. The lives of five writers will be investigated through their letters: Machado de Assis, Mário de Andrade, Monteiro Lobato, Clarice Lispector, and Graciliano Ramos. The cycle begins at 4 PM in the R. Magalhães Jr. Theater, with the lecture "It Is Better to Leave It Forgotten and Silent: The Correspondence of Machado de Assis (1860–1908)", given by C. S. Soares, author of the biography "Machado: Son of Winter". The coordinator of the lecture cycles, academic Antonio Carlos Secchin, states that letters have always been a precious source for learning about the behind-the-scenes of literary creation and contextualizing the interweaving between life and art. Secchin highlights that renowned specialists will reveal unexpected facets of the work of five great writers, based on what they revealed to their privileged interlocutors.
