De-indexing the minimum wage increase from other benefits is not on the agenda, says Planning minister

extra31 August 2026 at 20:18

On the day of submission of the 2027 Annual Budget Law (LOA) proposal to the National Congress, the minister of Planning and Budget, Bruno Moretti, reinforced the federal government's commitment to balancing public accounts. The minister guaranteed that, if President Lula is re-elected, the administration will not depend on the Legislative to pursue the fiscal target center.

Moretti stated that de-indexing the minimum wage increase from other benefits paid by the government, including retirement pensions, is not on the agenda in a possible fourth term of the president. This statement was made in response to possible speculations about changes in the way benefits are adjusted.

Different from previous years, the planning for 2027 brings a fiscal adjustment strategy based on spending control, not on increasing revenue. The minister explained that the government will not send to Congress any new revenue measure or tax increase.

The minister stated that the Executive will not be under uncertainty of Congressional approval or not of any measure to pursue the fiscal target center, emphasizing the government's autonomy in conducting fiscal policy.
