Maiquetía International Airport reopens on Tuesday with commercial flights, but with limited traffic

NewsAvia31 August 2026 at 18:37

Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, in the State of La Guaira, Venezuela, will resume commercial flights on Tuesday, September 1st, after being closed since the earthquakes of June 24th. The airport, which serves the capital Caracas, will operate from authorized temporary terminals, for both domestic and international flights.

The infrastructure was particularly affected by the earthquakes, especially the main runway and support buildings. During the two-month closure, air traffic was redirected to small airports in Valencia, Maracay, Barquisimeto, and Barcelona, which were not prepared to accommodate such high demand.

The Spanish carriers Air Europa and Iberia announced the resumption of flights to Caracas. Air Europa will resume flying between Madrid and Caracas on Tuesday, after having used Arturo Michelena Airport in Valencia during July and August. Iberia will resume the route on Thursday, September 3rd, with three weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Air operations to Venezuela were already facing difficulties since the end of 2025, when the Venezuelan Government suspended flight licenses after the airlines decided to suspend connections following a US alert urging aircraft to take extreme precautions when flying over the territory.
