The new Gloria elevator, in Lisbon, will have its inauguration expected for 2029, according to information released. This is a large-scale project for the city, which aims to recover a historic transportation system in the Baixa area.
Rui Lopo was one of the voices who commented on the project, clarifying that it does not consist of a simple reconstruction of the previous elevator transportation system. This distinction is important to understand the nature of the planned intervention.
The previous Gloria elevator derailed in 2025, which prompted the need for a new project. This incident marked a turning point in the history of this iconic equipment of the Portuguese capital.
The new elevator will be a renewed structure, different from the previous model that operated until the accident. The completion forecast for 2029 indicates that this is a medium-term project, which will require significant investment and a considerable construction period.
