France has begun applying fees of up to 12 euros per clothing item from companies like Shein or Temu. This measure comes within the framework of a penalty system specifically designed for the taxation of cheap fashion articles from countries outside the European Union.
The system was developed in dialogue with French parliamentarians and European companies in the clothing sector. This collaborative approach made it possible to create regulation targeted mainly at brands that sell products at very low prices through e-commerce platforms.
European companies in the sector, such as Zara and H&M, will be subject to an impact described as "close to zero". This is due to the fact that they already comply with European regulations and pay the appropriate taxes within the EU bloc.
