The World Health Organization warned of the risks associated with the increase in tobacco leaf production in Africa. The organization expressed concern about the growing trend of tobacco cultivation on the African continent.
According to the data presented, global tobacco leaf production fell by almost 19% between 2012 and 2024. This global decline contrasts with the situation in Africa, where production increased by almost 9% over the same period.
This growth in African tobacco production occurs in a context of global reduction in activity, which suggests a transfer of cultivation to the African continent. WHO warned of the dangers of this trend, particularly with regard to the impacts on public health and the sustainable development of the region.
