The Ministry of Mines and Energy opened a 20-day public consultation for the National Energy Storage Strategy, which establishes targets for the expansion of storage capacity in Brazil by 2040. The main objective is to add 9.76 gigawatts (GW) of capacity through battery systems and reversible hydroelectric plants (pumped hydro storage).
The strategy was developed by the Ministry in conjunction with the Energy Research Company (EPE) and foresees that Brazil needs to diversify its storage sources to guarantee energy security and the integration of variable renewable sources, such as wind and solar, into the national electrical system.
The public consultation will allow agents from the electricity sector, companies, representative entities, and civil society to contribute suggestions and criticisms to the document before its final publication. The contribution period began this week and interested parties can submit their manifestations through the Ministry of Mines and Energy portal.
The target of 9.76 GW represents a significant increase in the country's storage capacity, which is currently limited. The government argues that storage is essential to reduce dependence on flexible thermal plants and to enable the growth of renewable energy in Brazil.
