Google changed the designation of Lake Ontario to Lake America on maps available to users in the United States, a change that comes in compliance with Donald Trump's latest executive order. This change means the lake no longer appears with its traditional name on North American maps.
The company confirmed that in Canada the name Lake Ontario remains unchanged, not being affected by the decision. In other countries, Google chose to display both designations, allowing users to see both Lake Ontario and Lake America.
This change is part of a set of toponymic alterations determined by the Trump administration, which has been implementing a policy of renaming geographic features with non-American origins. Google decided to implement these changes in a geographically differentiated manner, adapting the presentation according to the user's location.
