Fronteira and Marvão join 80 million support package to recover territories affected by storms

The municipalities of Fronteira and Marvão, both in the district of Portalegre, have been included in the "Resilient Territories" programme contracts, a recovery mechanism aimed at territories affected by floods, inundations and Storm Kristin. The inclusion is set out in Resolution No. 176/2026 of the Council of Ministers, published in the Official Gazette on 31 August, which extends the coverage of this instrument to the Alto Alentejo region.

The overall maximum amount of the programme has been raised to 80,088,000 euros. However, the resolution does not establish any specific allocation for Fronteira or Marvão, as this amount corresponds to the maximum limit planned for all the territories covered. The distribution of funds will depend on the operations to be included and the respective programme contracts.

The programme contracts allow for ecological restoration operations of rivers and streams, including recovery work on affected systems and increasing the capacity to respond to future extreme weather events. The mechanism also includes the recovery or strengthening of infrastructure and services in the areas of environment and energy, combining the repair of damage with resilience-building interventions.

The resolution does not specify which projects will be carried out in each municipality nor the amounts to be allocated to them, leaving the concrete implementation of the support in Fronteira and Marvão yet to be determined.

Channel crossings by migrants in small boats have never been so few since 2019

The UK recorded this summer the lowest number of migrant crossings in small boats across the English Channel since 2019, with the British government celebrating the success of the cooperation agreement with France. The total number of migrants who crossed the English Channel between June and August fell to the lowest level in seven years, at a time when weather conditions and increased political tensions in France may have contributed to the reduction. The bilateral agreement, which includes greater French surveillance on the northern French beaches and information sharing, has been pointed out as a determining factor in the decrease of these dangerous crossings.
