Rajendra Dawadi, director of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Nuwakot, Nepal, made a crucial decision that saved the lives of approximately 900 students. After receiving four alerts about the advancing waters within minutes, he decided to interrupt classes and remove the students to higher ground at 9:10 AM local time.
Ten minutes after the withdrawal of the students, the flood hit the school building and devastated the area. The director's quick action prevented hundreds of students from being hit by the flood.
The tragedy is part of a natural disaster that has already left at least 939 dead and 3,925 missing in the affected region of Nepal. Among the missing, 592 are foreigners.
Roads and bridges were destroyed or damaged by the flood, and entire communities were isolated due to infrastructure damage. Rescue teams continue working to try to locate the missing.
