PSOE accuses PP of "manhandling" FEMP to call demonstrations that "are not held for Ceuta, but against Sánchez"

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General31 August 2026 at 13:57

The PSOE accused the PP of "manipulating" the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) to call demonstrations that, according to the socialists, are not held in defense of Ceuta, but against the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez. The PSOE spokesperson, Montse Mínguez, harshly criticized the partisan use of institutions by the Popular Party.

The rallies were called for this Wednesday in various Spanish municipalities under the protection of FEMP, which caused an open conflict between the two main Spanish parties. Faced with this situation, the PSOE sent an internal circular with instructions for their public officials not to participate in these demonstrations.

At the press conference after the party's executive meeting, Montse Mínguez questioned the PP's true interest in the autonomous city of Ceuta, accusing the populars of seeking only political profit from the migratory crisis instead of behaving as a State party.

The socialist defended that the PP should collaborate, for example, in the reception of migrant minors, instead of using Ceuta's situation for partisan purposes. This dispute arises in the context of a migratory crisis in the autonomous city, which has become a new political battlefield between the Sánchez government and the PP opposition.
