Ruben was a lion who lived six years completely alone in the facilities of a former zoo in Armenia. According to the organization Animal Defenders International (ADI), after the death of the zoo's owner, all other animals were removed from the location, leaving Ruben completely isolated. During this period of abandonment, the feline survived with little food and without any contact with other lions.
The prolonged isolation caused serious consequences for Ruben's health. The lion developed malnutrition, difficulty walking, and significant behavioral changes. The animal lived in this state of vulnerability until being rescued and transported to a sanctuary in South Africa.
In South Africa, Ruben was finally able to interact with other animals and began to roar again, showing signs of recovery. However, the lion died at 15 years of age in April 2024, after going through this long journey of isolation and subsequent rescue.
