Brussels says ChatGPT must comply with EU digital services rules

SAPO Notícias31 August 2026 at 12:39

The European Commission announced that the Digital Services Regulation rules will now cover ChatGPT, the OpenAI artificial intelligence tool. This decision means the company will have to comply with additional obligations established by European legislation.

ChatGPT will have to assess and mitigate systemic risks associated with its service and systems, as required by the regulation. This requirement applies to platforms that, due to their size and impact, are considered too large to be ignored in terms of digital security.

The measure falls within the broader implementation of the European Union Digital Services Regulation, which aims to establish stricter rules for technology platforms operating in the bloc. The regulation imposes specific requirements of transparency, accountability, and risk management on large online platforms.
