The number of dead as a result of the floods that hit the border between Nepal and Tibet reached 903, according to the latest update from the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. More than 4,000 people are missing, including nearly 600 foreign citizens. The catastrophe began last Wednesday, the 26th, after the collapse of a glacier that launched a large amount of ice, rocks, mud and debris onto the Himalayan rivers.
The flood destroyed cities, roads, bridges and hydroelectric plants, mainly near the border with China. Nepal claims it can conduct the general search and rescue operations alone, but requested specialized international aid to deal with the situation.
The Nepalese government estimates that between four and five billion dollars will be needed to rebuild the affected regions. More than 20,000 security agents have been mobilized for the rescue operations.
